Counselling and Psychotherapy in Northcote and Abbotsford, Melbourne
Attachment-based and somatic psychotherapy for adults who feel anxious, self-critical, emotionally overwhelmed or caught in repeating relationship patterns.
You may understand why you react the way you do, but still find yourself overthinking, becoming highly self-critical, shutting down in relationships or feeling constantly on edge.
In therapy, we explore these responses through conversation, paying attention to what happens emotionally, physically and in relationships. As you begin to understand these patterns more deeply, they can become less automatic, making it easier to manage difficult emotions, feel more secure in yourself and respond differently in relationships.
In-person sessions are available in Northcote on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in Abbotsford on Wednesdays. Online sessions are available across Australia.

Josh Wasniewski
Psychotherapist
You might notice things like:
• anxiety that is hard to switch off
• overthinking and constant self-monitoring
• relationship conflict that keeps repeating
• emotional shutdown or numbness
• harsh self-criticism
• difficulty feeling secure or settled in relationships
• stress responses that feel automatic or overwhelming
Why these patterns can feel difficult to change
Many emotional reactions develop gradually through repeated experiences, particularly within close relationships or environments where stress has become ongoing or difficult to escape.
You may know logically that something is safe, while another part of you still responds as though it is under threat.
Over time, exploring these patterns within a supportive therapeutic relationship can create opportunities to respond differently.
My approach
My work is informed by:
• attachment theory
• developmental neuroscience
• somatic psychotherapy, including Somatic Experiencing
Alongside talking and reflection, we may also pay attention to:
• tension, bracing or activation in the body
• impulses to withdraw, appease, defend or react
• patterns that emerge in relationships
• what helps you feel more settled, connected or able to respond differently
The aim is not only to reduce symptoms, but to help you feel more able to stay present, regulate difficult emotions and respond differently in relationships and everyday life.
Couples therapy
Alongside individual psychotherapy, I offer couples therapy in Melbourne for partners experiencing recurring conflict, emotional distance or difficulties with intimacy and connection.
My couples work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based approach that helps partners understand the patterns they become caught in and find different ways of responding to each other.
